In an exclusive interview with ‘AFLAMUNA ON LINE’, director Hala Abdullah discussed her experience in producing a documentary about the late Syrian director Omar Amiralay. She revealed that she had long dreamed of creating a film about him, but he was reluctant to talk about himself until he finally agreed. Hala recalled feeling intense anxiety and a sense of responsibility to document the legacy of one of the prominent filmmakers in the Arab world during that moment.

She added that she shared a relationship with Omar based on mutual trust and respect, allowing him to open up about personal aspects, especially those related to his mother. Among the details Omar disclosed was his desire to make a film about his mother, whom he described as controlling and difficult.

This was the first time Omar spoke freely, as if he felt these were his last moments, according to Hala. The director expressed her wish to portray various aspects of Omar’s life and romantic relationships in the film, but the opportunity didn’t arise due to the lack of approval from the involved women.

In the same context, she emphasized Omar’s kindness and good treatment, particularly towards the women he was involved with. Omar supported the concept of feminism and encouraged women in the film industry.

Hala Abdullah concluded her remarks by mentioning the delay in making her own film as an independent director, following her long career as an assistant director for over twenty years.
